Up In The Eaves

Up In The Eaves is a newly completed 3rd floor attic space in historic downtown, Charleston. Adding additional guest space for sleeping and gathering, guests feel independent and at home with all the essentials they need in their own space – a private bathroom, lounge area, beverage center and two additional bedrooms. Attics have some tricky pitched ceilings and small dormered windows (only on one side of the house!) but, there’s something about the low, sloped ceilings and gabled rooflines that just sets the tone for a cozy and enchanting space. Design illusions are your best friend when it comes to decorating a room with low ceilings or odd angles. We carried the rough-sawn hardwood floors found on the two lower levels to the 3rd floor and added decorative beams to enhance the angles of the roofline. A color palette of sage green, varying shades of blue, and beige were the foundations here, while pops of yellow, red, and pink in bedding, decorative lighting, art, and décor balance the muted shades. Wallpapering both the ceilings and walls, adding beadboard and tongue & groove, and custom built-in’s help to give each room in this space an enveloping effect that feels like you’re in this little cocoon.
